The popularity of the English muffin is not limited to the Great Britain. Many supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants across the United States and the rest of the world serve them as well. English muffins were originally made from left over dough and potatoes. They were commonly eaten by the servants of the Victorian society. As the societies evolved, members of other classes also began enjoying the amazing taste and flavor of the muffins.
Over the years, people across the world have been consuming the English muffins as a snack or a part of a larger meal. The muffin is essentially made from yeast-leavened flour, milk and sugar. Unlike their American counterparts, the English muffins are small, round and thin.
English muffins are easy to prepare. Simply blend sugar, salt, and shortening in hot water. Wait for the mixture to cool. Add yeast and sugar to another bowl of hot water. Mix everything before adding the mixture to milk powder. Add flour to the mixture as well. Mix all the components well & cover the batter. Allow it to rise for about 30 minutes. Pre-heat an electric skillet to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
One of the most commonly used tools for preparing English muffins are the metal rings. Place the rings on the skillet. Spray them with a non-stick spray. Add the batter to the rings with the help of a scoop. Cover & cook for a few minutes. Flip the muffins & heat again. Place the muffins on a cooling rack and allow them to cool before taking off d metal rings.
In the past, many bakers made the muffin rings by cutting the bottom of the tuna fish cans. However, modern cans are not made ofthe same sturdy metal and do not work as well. They are readily available in kitchen stores. You can also make your own rings with the help of heavy aluminum foil. Cut out a twelve-inch sheet of the foil. Fold up about one and a half inches of it. Continue to fold the foil until the end of the sheet. When you reach the end, fold the remaining foil over. The smooth side of the foil will become the inside of the ring. With the smooth side turned inside, make a ring with the foil. The diameter should be three and a half to four inches. Use paper clips to join the two ends of the ring. You can simply coat the inner side of the oil ring with vegetable oil & pour your batter in them.
The popularity of English muffins has also motivated bakers and chefs to come up withsome interesting modifications. Today you will find multi-grain, mixed grain, rye and whole wheat English muffin recipes as well. Other innovations include the English muffin pizza. Simply place the muffins on an aluminum foil. Spread some pizza sauce and cheese over them and bake them in an oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. You can be imaginative and creative yourself, and come up with some other interesting alterations. This versatile piece of bread can be used in many ways.
